Daylight

Author: Elizabeth Knox

weird tale
New Zealand police officer Brian "Bad" Phelan goes on vacation near the French-Italian border to recover from injuries he received while defusing a bomb. While there, he helps the locals recover the drowned body of a woman, but notices how the victim looks like the twin of someone he met years ago in an eerily similar scenario.

Unable to ignore the doppelganger, Bad begins making inquiries into the deceased, Martine Dardo, but he finds is his unofficial investigation is competing with other inquiries. His efforts lead to a Sister Raimondi. Father Daniel Octave, assisted by scholar Eve Moskelutz, has been looking into the qualifications for sainthood for the WW II heroine Sister Raimondi who was killed by Nazis. Meanwhile Eve's twin sister Dawn studies tongues and looking warily yet actively at the goings on is the vampire Lou Ila.

Whether you read this novel in DAYLIGHT or in the evening, this is one weird tale. The story line seems disconnected yet the talent of Elizabeth Knox pulls it together so that the audience begins to wonder whether God will provide signs that the deceased nun is a saint or whether a vampire is one of God's creatures? None of the cast is likable except the poetic vampire, but that is part of the unnatural fun as fans of Ms. Knox will enjoy this non-linear novel that makes a reader struggle to define saint.

Authors: Enid Blyton and Jolyne Knox
Average review score:

A great mystery for the Famous Five
"Five on Finniston Farm" was the first Enid Blyton book I ever read. Needless to say it got me hooked. All the Famous Five books are full of adventure and mystery. I really recommend any of them for younger readers.

In this one, the five are sent to Finniston Farm for a holiday. Soon they discover the Finniston's are in danger of losing the farm and they must find a way to help them before it is too late.

Any young reader who enjoys adventure stories or mysteries should read this book.

The Forgotten Memoir of John Knox: A Year in the Life of a Supreme Court Clerk in Fdr's Washington
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (June, 2002)
Authors: John Knox, Dennis J. Hutchinson, and David J. Garrow
Average review score:

Great on content, just a little dry
If you're the ultimate policy wonk on 2nd Amendment law, you'll want to read this book just for John Knox's insights into the character of Justice McReynolds who wrote the decision in U.S. v. Miller, 1939. Unfortunately, Knox was no longer clerking for McReynolds in 1939, so we miss the inside story on that landmark decision, but after you've read this book you'll better understand why Miller makes so little sense.

Good information, well presented
This book offers good, clear information about a variety of medical conditions. Focused around individual disease processes. This is a book for learning about diagnosis, treatment, and nursing care, not about specific critical care skills.

Hatchet (Vietnam War Series, No 1)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (November, 1991)
Author: Knox Gordon
Average review score:

a real good read
this book will introduce the reader to just how the special forces operated during viet nam. the book is geared towards younger audiences, but has good plot development and well rounded characters. one thing i thought was nice was that the book combated the myth of what the special forces are (teachers)and just how secretive they could be. This book is a lead in to the next three books (there may be more but i dont know about them). it is a good story and a good read.

Polk Put Simply
While many people try to depict the lives of our past Presidents in four or five hundred pages, this abbreviated view of the life and associations of James K. Polk is a refreshing change. As a history major, this book provides all of the pertinent information required to gain an insightful depiction of this man. It is a must read for anyone interested in Jacksonian America and an entertaining read for thinkers from all walks of life.

Mussolini Unleashed, 1939-1941 : Politics and Strategy in Fascist Italy's Last War
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (March, 1982)
Author: MacGregor Knox
Average review score:

Defeat is not an orphan.
One of the very few books on Mussolini that shows the true causes of Italy's failure in her war aims during World War II. MacGregor Knox does not fall into the trap that so many other historians show when retelling the total and abject failure of Italy's land, sea and air forces during the last world war. This is not simply a retelling of a dictator leading his country to ruin.

The poor leadership of Italy's military leaders are shown in full light (Marshal Badoglio's vascillations, General Graziani's timidity and Admiral Cagnari's fabian tatics). The book also shows Mussolini's problems with the monarchy, the church, and the unwillingless of the Italian people themselves to be drawn into another world war.

A must read for anyone who wants to read an unblemished account of Italy's performance in the last world war.

Older People and the Church
Published in Hardcover by T&t Clark Ltd (September, 2002)
Author: Ian Knox
Average review score:

Every church official should own this
This book should be mandatory reading before a person can get a degree in the religion field or hold any position in the church. It is extremely insightful and presents the dilemma of age dynamics within the religious field. However, the author's attitude came across as condescending and I even felt that he should have watched how he referred to the older folks on more than one occasion. He loses a star for lack of attention to wording.

Schuco Classic Tin Toys
Published in Hardcover by Krause Publications (January, 2003)
Author: Chris Knox
Average review score:

Classic book about classic toys
Chris Knox's book, "Schuco Classic Tin Toys", is wonderfully illustrated with stunning photography. He covers Schuco through the early years, it's rise as an innovative creator of toys, it's demise, and finally, it's resurrection.

What sets the book apart from other toy books is the beautiful photographs of Schuco toys. The photography is nothing short of spectacular.

While the book offers Schuco history and pricing, it's more of a "coffee table" book. Enjoy it for the images of classic (and collectible) toys from the Schuco line.
